Setting commission rates for your team

Give each team member a commission rate on services and on retail, change it from a chosen day, and see how FullColumn works commission out.

Each team member can earn a percentage of what clients pay for their services, and a percentage of the retail products they sell. FullColumn works out commission on every sale and shows it in Reports → Pay, so pay day is a matter of reading it off.

Setting a team member's commission rates

  1. Open Settings → Team & roster and click the team member.
  2. Enter Commission on services and Commission on retail as percentages, from 0 to 100 (two decimal places, like 12.5).
  3. Choose Save.

A blank rate is 0%, which means no commission. For someone you're adding, the rates apply to all their sales. For someone already on the team, a change applies from a day you choose: see changing a commission rate from a chosen day.

Setting rates needs "See and change pay and commission" (the commission fields only show with it). Opening team members' details also needs "Manage the team, permissions and PINs", so someone with only the pay permission changes rates from Reports → Pay instead: the % button beside each person opens the same commission fields. Owners have both. See who can see and change commission.

Changing a commission rate from a chosen day

Under someone's rates, New rates start from is set to today. Save is there once saving would change something: other rates, or the same rates from another day (to start today's rate earlier, or to take back a change set for later).

  • Sales before that day keep the rate they had, so pay you've already worked out doesn't change.
  • Sales on and after that day earn the new rate.
  • Any rate change already set for that day or later is replaced. FullColumn lists what would be replaced ("Saving replaces this change: …") before you save.

To raise someone's commission from the start of next month, say, change the rates and pick the 1st as the day they start. Their list of rates shows it as "starting" that day until it comes.

Correcting a pay period you haven't paid yet

Got a rate wrong? Change it and pick an earlier day under New rates start from: every sale from that day on is worked out again at the corrected rate, and Reports → Pay changes to match. Only do this for a period you haven't paid yet, since the figures for it will change.

Taking back a rate change

Once someone has more than one rate (or one starting later), their details list each rate with its day and who set it ("set by Peter"). To take one back, choose the bin beside it and confirm Remove. Sales from that day go back to the rate before it, and Reports → Pay changes to match.

How commission is worked out

Commission is a percentage of what the client actually paid for each service or product:

  • After discounts: a discount on the line comes off, and a discount on the whole sale is shared across its items.
  • Without tax: tax never earns commission, whether your prices include it or not.
  • On the day it's sold, at the rate the team member had that day.

Some things never earn commission:

  • Tips go to the team member in full, with no commission on them.
  • Selling a gift voucher: the voucher is a way to pay. When a client later pays for a service with it, that service earns commission on the day it's sold.
  • Deposits and account credit: the same. Commission is on the service when it's checked out, not on the deposit.
  • Items not given to anyone at checkout earn nobody commission.

If a sale is voided later, its commission is taken back in the pay period it's voided, so a period you've already paid stays as it was.

Who can see and change commission

  • "See and change pay and commission" is needed to see anyone's rates or change them. Owners have it; managers and staff don't unless the owner gives it to them. On a Front desk shared device, it asks for the person's password first.
  • Rates are set from Reports → Pay (the % button beside each person), which needs nothing more, or in team members' details, which also needs "Manage the team, permissions and PINs".
  • Nobody can change their own commission unless they hold every permission (in practice, the owner). Their own rates show as "Only the salon owner can change your own commission."
  • Someone who can do things you can't can only be changed by the owner, commission included.

Where commission shows

  • Reports → Pay shows each person's service and retail takings, commission, tips and rostered hours for any period. Each person's % button changes their rates there. If nobody has a rate yet, it says so. See pay and commission reports.
  • Each stylist sees their own figures in My performance. See my performance and pay.

Common questions

Do tips earn commission?

No. Tips are paid to the team member in full and never commissioned.

Is commission worked out on the price with or without tax?

Without tax, and after any discount.

Can I set a different commission for different services?

No. Each team member has one rate for services and one for retail products.

Can a manager change their own commission?

No, even with "See and change pay and commission". Only someone with every permission, like the owner, can change their own.

What happens to commission when a sale is voided?

It's taken back in the pay period the sale is voided, not the one it was made in, so pay you've already worked out for that earlier period doesn't change.

We changed someone's rate last week by mistake. Can I undo it?

Yes. Open their details and remove that rate change with the bin beside it. Sales go back to the rate before it.
