Taking payment at checkout
Take cash with change, EFTPOS on your own terminal, gift vouchers, bank transfers, account credit and your own payment types, or split a bill between them.
The Payment panel at checkout is where the client pays. Tap a way to pay and it fills in what's left to pay; add more than one to split the bill. The sale can be completed once the payments add up to the total exactly.
The ways to pay at checkout
| Button | What it's for |
|---|---|
| Card | A card payment through FullColumn: your Stripe card reader, a QR code or payment link, or the client's saved card. Only shows once Stripe is set up. See card payments. |
| EFTPOS | A card paid on your own card terminal, outside FullColumn. |
| Cash | Cash, with change worked out for you. |
| Voucher | One of your gift vouchers, by its code. |
| Bank | A bank transfer. |
| Other | Anything else. |
| Your own types | Ways to pay you've added, like Afterpay or Zip, in checkout settings. |
When the client has account credit, such as a deposit, a Use credit button shows above these.
"Card" in FullColumn always means money taken through Stripe. Money taken on any other terminal is EFTPOS, even when the client tapped a credit card.
Taking cash and giving change
- Tap Cash. It fills in what's left to pay.
- Type what the client handed over under Cash received, or tap one of the amounts below it: the exact amount, or the next round notes up.
- Change to give shows the change.
The change shows again in large type on the finished sale, so you can count it out. Cash taken goes into the end-of-day cash-up.
Recording EFTPOS on your own card terminal
Tap EFTPOS, put the amount through your own terminal as usual, and complete the sale. FullColumn records the payment; it doesn't talk to your terminal. If you'd opened Card by mistake, its window has Paid on your own card terminal – record it as EFTPOS too.
Paying with a gift voucher
- Tap Voucher.
- Type or scan the Voucher code and press Check (or Enter).
- FullColumn shows what's left on it, like "$40.00 available", and uses as much as the bill needs.
A voucher that has expired or been voided says so, and can't be used. If the voucher doesn't cover everything, add another payment for the rest. The voucher's balance comes down when the sale is completed.
Using a client's account credit at checkout
Account credit (a deposit, money paid online when booking, or credit you've added) is never taken off the bill by itself. Checkout shows "Sam has $30.00 account credit" with Use credit:
- Choose the client as the payer, if they aren't already.
- Press Use credit. It covers as much of the bill as the credit will, and other payments you've entered come down to make room.
- Lower the amount if they'd rather keep some for next time.
Only the payer's own credit can be used. See account credit.
Splitting a payment between several ways to pay
Tap a second way to pay and it fills in whatever is still unpaid. Change any amount by typing over it.
- Still to pay shows until it's covered.
- Overpaid shows if the payments come to more than the total. Bring one down. For change, keep the cash amount at what's owed and type what they handed over under Cash received.
- Fully paid means you can complete the sale.
When the sale has just one cash, EFTPOS, bank or other payment, its amount follows the total as you add or remove items. With two or more, they stay as you entered them. Press × to take a payment off.
Your own payment types
Add the ways your salon takes money that aren't built in, like Afterpay, Zip or salon finance, under Settings → Checkout → Payment types. Each one gets its own button at checkout and shows on its own in the cash-up and reports. See checkout settings.
No card surcharges
FullColumn never adds a fee or surcharge to any way to pay. Card surcharges are banned in Australia, so there's no setting for one.
Common questions
Why isn't there a Card button?
Card payments through FullColumn need Stripe set up and taking payments. Until then, use EFTPOS for cards on your own terminal. See setting up Stripe.
Can a client pay part now and the rest later?
A sale is completed only when it's paid in full. To come back to it, park the sale; payments entered before parking aren't kept, so take them all when you finish. To take money ahead of an appointment, take a deposit instead.
I chose the wrong payment method. How do I fix it?
Before completing the sale, press × on the payment and add the right one. After, void the sale and check it out again: see refunds and voiding sales.
