Checkout settings for payment types and discount reasons

Add your own ways to pay, like Afterpay or Zip, set up discount reasons, and choose whether every discount needs one.

Settings → Checkout is where you add your own ways to pay and the reasons your team can give for a discount. Other settings that shape checkout, like tax, card payments and the receipt message, live elsewhere: see other settings that affect checkout.

Adding your own payment types

Card, EFTPOS, cash, gift voucher, bank transfer and Other are always there. Add any other way your salon takes money, like Afterpay, Zip or salon finance:

  1. Open Settings → Checkout → Payment types.
  2. Type the name, like "Afterpay", and press Add.

Each payment type gets its own button at checkout and when taking a deposit, and shows separately in the cash-up and reports.

  • Names can be up to 40 characters, and can't be one of the built-in ways to pay, like "Cash" or "Card".
  • You can have up to 30 payment types in use.
  • Payment types never add a fee: card surcharges aren't allowed in Australia.

Editing payment types needs Connect Stripe and SMS, and change payment settings.

Renaming or retiring a payment type

  • Press the pencil beside a payment type to rename it.
  • Press Retire to stop offering it at checkout. Past sales still show it, and reports still count it.
  • Retired payment types are listed underneath: press Bring back to offer one again.

Adding a name you've retired asks you to bring the old one back instead, so reports keep counting it in one place.

Setting up discount reasons

Discount reasons say why money came off a sale: Birthday, Staff, Model, Complaint, whatever suits your salon. The reason is saved with the sale, shown on the receipt, and Reports break discounts down by reason.

  1. Open Settings → Checkout → Discount reasons.
  2. Type a reason, like "Birthday", and press Add.

Rename, Retire and Bring back work as they do for payment types. A retired reason isn't offered at checkout any more; past sales keep it. Up to 30 reasons can be in use.

At checkout, reasons show as buttons when giving a discount: see discounts at checkout.

Making every discount need a reason

Turn on Every discount needs a reason, then press Save. Staff then pick a reason at checkout before they can finish a sale with a discount on it, whether on one item or the whole sale. Promo code discounts already have the code as their reason.

It only asks while you have discount reasons in use: with none (or every one retired), there's nothing to choose, so discounts go through without one.

Discount reasons and this setting need Change salon settings (hours, online booking, messages, branding).

Who can change checkout settings

Settings → Checkout shows for anyone with Change salon settings (hours, online booking, messages, branding) or Connect Stripe and SMS, and change payment settings. Payment types need the second; discount reasons and Every discount needs a reason need the first. Someone with only one sees the other list but can't change it, and it says which permission it takes. Owners have both, and managers do by default.

Common questions

Can I add a surcharge for Afterpay or credit cards?

No. Payment types never add a fee, and card surcharges are banned in Australia.

I retired a payment type by mistake. Is it gone?

No. Press Bring back under Retired and it's offered at checkout again, with its past sales still counted.

Where do I record a card paid on our own terminal?

Under EFTPOS at checkout. You don't need a payment type for it.
