Pay and commission report: working out what to pay your team
The Pay report works out each team member's commission, tips and hours for any dates, takes back voided sales, and downloads a spreadsheet for payroll.
Reports → Pay works out what each team member earned for the dates you choose: their service and retail takings, commission on each, tips, and their rostered and booked hours, with a spreadsheet for payroll. A pay period's figures never change once it's over, so you can run it for each pay period and trust it later.
Who can see the Pay report
The Pay report needs "See and change pay and commission". Only owners have it to start with; an owner can give it to someone else in Settings → Team & roster. Managers don't have it unless they're given it. On a Front desk device it asks for the person's password first.
The same permission shows the Commission column on the Overview and lets someone change commission rates. Team members see their own commission and tips on My performance without it.
Running pay for a pay period
- Open Reports → Pay.
- Choose the dates: Last week, Last month or Custom for a fortnight.
- Check each person's row, and any voided sales under it.
- Press Download for payroll for the spreadsheet.
The Pay report shows the totals at the top (Commission, split into services and retail; Tips; Service takings and Retail takings, after discounts and without tax; and Takings per rostered hour), then By team member:
| Column | What it is |
|---|---|
| Team member | With their commission rates under their name (services · retail), or how they changed during the dates |
| Services and Commission | Service takings after discounts and without tax, and the commission on them |
| Retail and Commission | Product takings worked out the same way, and the commission on them |
| Tips | Tips given to them, paid in full |
| To pay | Commission and tips, less any voided sales taken back |
| Rostered and Booked | Their rostered hours, and their time with clients (processing time left out) |
| Per hour | Their service and retail takings for each rostered hour |
Everyone with sales, tips, appointments or rostered hours in the dates is listed, and everyone with a calendar column even if they had none. On a phone, each person is a card with the same figures.
How commission is worked out
Commission on the Pay report is a percentage of what the client paid for each service or product, without tax:
- After discounts. A discount on a single item comes off that item. A discount off the whole sale is shared across the sale's items (not gift vouchers) in proportion to their prices.
- Without tax. Where your prices include tax (GST in Australia), the tax in them is taken out; where tax is added at checkout, it was never in them.
- At the rate on the day of the sale. Rates are set by date, so changing someone's rate from a date never changes what they earned before it. If it changed part-way through the dates, their row shows both rates, and each sale uses the one on its day.
- Services and retail have their own rates.
- Tips are theirs in full, and never commissioned.
- Gift vouchers and account credit are ways to pay. Selling a gift voucher or taking a deposit earns no commission; the services and products they pay for do, on the day they're sold.
- Fees and other items (no-show and late cancellation fees, custom items) are nobody's pay.
Each sale is worked out and rounded on its own, so a sale voided later takes back exactly what it earned.
For example, with prices that include GST, a $110 colour with 10% off the whole sale: the client pays $99, which is $90 without GST. At a 40% service rate, that's $36 commission.
Set each person's rates with the % button beside their name on the Pay report, or in their details in Settings → Team & roster: see commission rates. If nobody has a rate yet, the Pay report says so.
Voided sales on the Pay report
On the Pay report, a sale counts in the dates it was made, even if it's voided afterwards, so pay you've already worked out never changes. When a sale is voided, what it earned is taken back in the dates it was voided, on a line of its own under the person: Voided: sale of 12 Oct, with the takings, commission and tips taken off. A sale made and voided in the same dates cancels out.
This is different from Team performance and the Overview's takings, which leave a voided sale out of the day it was made (the Overview's Commission column follows Pay). A card refund made in the Stripe Dashboard doesn't change pay: the sale still counts as sold. To take back what a sale earned, void it. See refunds and voiding sales.
Takings per rostered hour
Takings per rostered hour on the Pay report is someone's service and retail takings (after discounts, without tax, less voided sales) divided by their rostered hours: what each hour on the roster brought in. Rostered hours are their weekly roster with any one-day changes, for people still on the team; booked hours are their time with clients, processing time left out. Someone with no rostered hours shows "–".
Sales not given to anyone
Services, products and tips put through at checkout without a team member show on the Pay report as Not given to anyone. They earn no commission, but they're in the totals at the top, so the totals match the salon's takings. To give them to someone, choose the team member on each line at checkout.
The payroll spreadsheet
Download for payroll on the Pay report saves a spreadsheet with a row for each person, and under it a row for each of their sales voided in the dates. Its columns are the team member, Service takings (ex GST), Service commission %, Service commission, Retail takings (ex GST), Retail commission %, Retail commission, Total commission, Tips, Commission + tips, To pay, Rostered hours, Booked hours, Appointments and Takings per rostered hour (ex GST) (named after your tax). A rate that changed during the dates shows as "35 to 2026-10-14; 40 from 2026-10-15".
Sales not given to anyone and the totals come last. Every column adds up down the sheet except To pay, which is each person's own figure after voided sales.
Common questions
Why are takings on the Pay report lower than on Team performance?
The Pay report takes off discounts off the whole sale and leaves out tax, because commission is paid on what the client paid without tax. Team performance shows takings before discounts off the whole sale, with tax if your prices include it.
I changed someone's commission rate. Does it change last month's pay?
Only if you set the new rate to start from a date in last month. Each sale uses the rate on its day. See commission rates.
Who gets commission on a product sold during someone else's appointment?
Whoever the product's line was put through under at checkout. Each line on a sale can be a different team member.
Does the Pay report include wages?
No. It works out commission and tips, with rostered hours for your payroll. Wages are paid outside FullColumn.
Why did a team member's pay go down this pay period?
A sale from an earlier pay period was voided in this one. Its line, Voided: sale of and the day, shows under them with what was taken back.
