# Price levels: different prices for junior and senior stylists

> Set up levels like Junior, Senior and Director, put each stylist on one, and set each service's price and time per level, or for one person.

Price levels let your stylists charge different prices for the same service: a cut with a junior costs less than with your director. You name the levels, put each stylist on one, and set what each level charges (and how long it takes) service by service. A stylist can also have their own price or time for a service, whatever their level.

## How FullColumn picks a stylist's price and time

For each service, FullColumn uses the first of these that's set:

1. **The stylist's own price or time** for that service (an exception, set on the service).
2. **Their level's price or time** for that service.
3. **The service's standard price or time.**

Price and time are picked separately, so a level can change just the price, just the time, or both. A stylist with no level charges the standard prices.

This applies everywhere: the calendar, checkout and your booking page. Appointments already booked keep the price and time they were booked at, so changing prices, or moving someone to another level, never changes them.

## Setting up price levels

1. Open **Settings → Team & roster** and choose **Price levels**.
2. Type a level's name and choose **Add level**, or choose **Start with Junior, Stylist, Senior and Director** to begin with those four.
3. Put them in order, lowest first, with the arrows. That's the order they're listed in when you set prices.
4. Choose **Done**.

To rename a level, change its name in the list. You can have up to 12 levels, each name used once. Next to each level is how many people are on it.

Setting up levels, and choosing who's on which, needs "Manage the team, permissions and PINs". Setting what each level charges needs "Edit services and prices". Owners have every permission.

## Putting a stylist on a price level

1. Open **Settings → Team & roster** and click the team member.
2. Under **Price level**, choose their level, or **Standard prices**.
3. Choose **Save**.

The hint says what it means: "They charge Senior prices (and times), where a service has them." **Price level** only shows for team members who take appointments, once you have at least one level. When someone moves up a level, their appointments already booked keep their prices.

## Setting each service's prices by level

1. Open **Settings → Services** and click the service.
2. Under **Prices by level** (there once you have price levels), enter a price and choose a time for each level that's different from the standard.
3. Choose **Save**.

Leave a level blank to use the standard price and time, shown greyed in the empty boxes. Under **Who does it**, each stylist's line shows what they'll charge, like "$120.00 · 1h 15m".

## Giving one stylist their own price or time

For someone whose price or time differs from their level's (or from the standard, without levels):

1. Open the service in **Settings → Services**.
2. Choose **Exceptions for individual team members**.
3. Enter their price, choose their time, or both. Blank uses their level's (or the standard).
4. Choose **Save**.

Their line under **Who does it** is marked "own". The number in brackets beside **Exceptions for individual team members** is how many people have one.

## How a stylist's time works with processing time

When a level or a stylist takes a different time for a service with processing time, the difference comes off (or goes on) the busy part. The processing (the colour developing) stays the same, because it doesn't depend on who applied it. Padding time before and after stays the same too.

## What clients see on your booking page

- When clients choose **Anyone**, a service whose price differs between stylists shows the range, like "$95–$140", and its time can show a range too.
- When they choose a stylist, they see that stylist's price and time.
- Turn on **Show each stylist’s price level** in **Settings → Online booking** to show the level (like "Senior") under each stylist's name. It's there when clients can choose their stylist and you have levels. Their prices show either way.

If your prices are set before tax, the booking page shows them with tax added. See [what your clients see](https://docs.fullcolumn.com/online-booking/what-clients-see).

## Moving an appointment to a stylist with a different price

When you move a service on the calendar to someone who charges differently:

- **Cheaper with them**: the price drops to theirs, unless the client has already paid a deposit or the full price online.
- **Dearer with them**: FullColumn asks whether to keep the booked price or charge theirs ("Keep $95 or charge $120 (Senior)?").

The time stays as booked, and an appointment that's been paid for keeps its price. A [bundle](https://docs.fullcolumn.com/services/bundles) with its own price costs the same whoever does it. See [moving and changing appointments](https://docs.fullcolumn.com/calendar/changing-appointments).

## Removing a price level

1. Open **Settings → Team & roster → Price levels**.
2. Choose the bin beside the level, then **Remove level**.

Its team members go back to standard prices (or their own, where they have exceptions), and its prices come off every service. Appointments already booked keep their prices.

## Common questions

### Do appointments already booked change when I change a level's price?

No. Appointments keep the price and time they were booked at. Only new bookings use the new price.

### Can a level take longer without costing more?

Yes. Leave the level's price blank and choose only its time: it charges the standard price and books the longer time.

### Can one stylist have their own price without setting up levels?

Yes. Open the service, choose **Exceptions for individual team members**, and enter their price.

### Does a bundle's price follow price levels?

A bundle with its own price costs the same with everyone. A bundle without one costs what its services add up to for the stylist booked, at their own or their level's prices.

### Why don't I see Price level on a team member?

You need at least one price level first (**Price levels** in **Settings → Team & roster**), and the team member needs **Takes appointments** turned on.
